Portugal vs. Brazil - How Similar Are They?

Image
In 2018, I spent two amazing months in Rio de Janeiro, the marvellous city of Brazil with beaches, incredible landscapes and an obsession with football. I have also been to Foz do Iguaçu and Manaus which are some of the most amazing experiences of my life. This month I spent a week in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal which has postcard-worthy views and incredible food. Portugal and Brazil share a common culture and language. I was inspired to write this post when I was talking with a man on my flight to Lisbon in Portuguese and it turned out he was from Minas Gerais and talked to me about the differences between Brazil and Portugal. First thing that I would say is that Brazil and Portugal are both lusophone countries. That means they both speak Portuguese, a language which I'd say I can speak fairly well. I can hold a conversation with a Brazilian, however, when it comes to Portuguese in Portugal, I found the accent harder to understand. The difference between Portuguese in Por...

My Time In Portugal -The Greatness of Europe's West Coast

Image
For a very long time I had wanted to visit Portugal and had been on the number one spot for countries I want to visit in Europe. As I speak Portuguese, it had only made me more curious to go and I had seen Lisbon in pictures, but it is more amazing seeing it first hand. Lisbon has steep streets, old-style streetcars and a big red suspension bridge. It's like the San Francisco on the west coast of Europe. As soon as I left my bag in the hostel, I booted out to go explore the city and the first spot I found was the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, which is near the Rua Augusta Arch, the main square in Lisbon which is the centre of the city. From the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantâra, it's atop a very steep hill but you can pay two euros to ride the funicular. Once you get off the tram, you can see some great views of Alfama and the Castelo de São Jorge which was the next place I'd go to.  One thing to note while walking through Lisbon is that ...

How and Why I Travel Alone

Image
When I tell friends that I'm going to travel somewhere, one of the first things that they ask me is who I'm going with. When I was walking through Seoul, I bumped into two university students who found the concept of me visiting the country on my own flat-out bizarre. These experiences of mine signify that it seems a bit odd to travel solo. However the truth is that travelling alone in my opinion at least has been great experience. Not only do I make more friends along the way, but also I truly feel free to do what I want wherever I go. There are many factors which contribute to the fact that I travel alone. It is mostly because my friends have other commitments and are not at liberty to travel like I can. Travelling alone is nowhere near as bad as you think, it means you can do what you want, you can travel at your own pace and organising everything individually makes planning simple. Travelling alone makes it easier to meet people on the road too as other fellow travelle...

The 5 Worst Things About Scotland

Image
Scotland is a beautiful country, there is no doubt about that. However, when I was asked what I thought about Scotland, I said "ehh it's ok I guess" I like to joke about the fact that I love warm weather and the beach, a rare occurrence in Scotland, I was born in the wrong country. Scotland has me a lot to complain about, but to be fair there are a lot of horrible things that Scotland doesn't have like high crime rates and pollution. Here are five of my least favourite things about my home country and they are in no particular order. 5. The Weather is Abysmal    This first one is a no-brainer, Scotland is often associated with horrible weather. No matter what season it is, it will rain. Even in march, it will snow at the least convenient time and in the summer, it will rain while you least expect it. On the rare occasion there is sunshine, it is brilliant, there are loads of beautiful beaches to go to in Scotland and the sunsets are a marvel to behold. Sadly, ...
