How I Have Learned Languages

Image
Everyone has a hobby, some people play an instrument, others play a sport, but if you ask me, learning languages is my hobby. In the UK, hardly anyone will try to learn a foreign languages unless they study it at uni or need it for work. I speak three languages fluently and many people tell me that they wish they could speak a foreign language like I could. What I say to that is that Rome wasn't built in a day, back in my first year in high school, my start to French was not so great. On my first few vocabulary tests, I could not even get a single answer right, that was because learning languages was such a  new concept to me and I did not know the effective methods of doing so. After a few weeks of practicing, I started to get better at it thanks to having an excellent memory and I realised my aptitude for language learning. When I was 13, I had to choose my subjects and I decided to take National 5 Spanish, this was because I had already excelled in French and I had no o...

Should YOU take a gap year?

Image
A gap year, simply put, is a time between finishing high school and starting university. Most people associate a gap year with travelling the world, a good gap year should be about doing a bit of work, a bit of travelling and a bit of volunteering. Before taking a year out, you need to consider why you are doing so, what you are going to do and whether or not it is a good idea. Some believe it is simply a waste of time and would prefer to focus their energies on going to university. That was not me though, I decided to take a gap year because in my high school, they put immense pressure upon us to make a good UCAS application and good university offers. I felt that at the age of 17, not even old enough to drink, would be too young to go to university. As I had entered my final year of high school, I had just been on an incredible holiday with my dad. We spent two weeks in Southeast Asia and before that I hadn't really travelled anywhere except for family holidays to Europea...

When we visit new countries, we are exposed to new cultures in which people behave differently from our own and there are some countries which which have a reputation of being more welcoming than others. This is all from my experiences and it is in no particular order. 1. Canada  Anyone who tells you that they've been to Canada will indefinitely tell you that Canadian people are super friendly and are stereotypically known for saying "sorry" all the time. The first time I went to Canada was back in 2012, my family and I stayed with our relative who treated us like royalty. He was an incredible host and we got to visit more of our relatives in Vancouver. Moreover, in 2016 I visited Toronto on a holiday to America with my dad, Toronto feels like a has friendlier people than its US counterparts such as New York and Chicago and a friend from Toronto told me that you can make friends while waiting in line at the supermarket. 2. Sweden  Sweden is the home of ABBA...
